SURREY YOUTH GAMES
After a 5 year stint volunteering his help with the Surrey Youth Games trials and coaching sessions, newly-qualified Ebbisham Squash Coach CHRIS MATHEWS became the SYG E&EBC Mini Squash & Squash Team Manager this year for the first time, with two squads of 8 children who represented Epsom & Ewell Borough in the Surrey Youth Games in June 2009. The teams (comprising several Ebbisham members and some who’d only just started playing squash) didn’t win any medals this year but enjoyed themselves immensely!
In recognition of his support, great commitment and enthusiasm, CHRIS MATHEWS was subsequently awarded Epsom & Ewell Borough’s TEAM MANAGER OF THE SURREY YOUTH GAMES 2009 and was also RUNNER-UP for VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR at this year’s prestigious Surrey Sports Awards in October 2009. Well done, Chris, and many thanks again on behalf of everyone at Ebbisham Sports Club and E&EBC!

TRI-SQUASH AFTER-SCHOOL COACHING COURSE
In collaboration with 3 local Borough Councils (Epsom & Ewell, Mole Valley & Elmbridge), Active Surrey, School Sports Partnerships and England Squash National Governing Body, Ebbisham Sports Club, Ashtead Squash Club and XCel Leisure Centre are delivering free 10 week Tri-Squash After-School Coaching Courses for local primary schoolchildren during January-March 2009, culminating in a 3-Borough Squash Competition to be held at XCel Centre in Walton-on-Thames.
This exciting new venture was successful in its bid for funding by Sport England as part of the 'Sport Unlimited' (Extending Activities) funding targeted at "semi-sporty" children and young people, engaging them in an extra 1-2 hours a week of high quality sport and physical activity.

MEDAL SUCCESS AT SURREY YOUTH GAMES 2008
Over the 21st & 22nd June 2008, nearly 200 children from Epsom & Ewell travelled to compete in the Surrey Youth Games. Epsom & Ewell entered 21 teams across 12 different sports, and were the Borough with the most participants entered. Through a tremendous effort by all the participants, team managers and volunteers Epsom & Ewell finished 5th out of 11 boroughs! A great result considering the Borough is the smallest of all 11 in Surrey.
Ebbisham Sports Club was pleased to again support the Surrey Youth Games by providing free SYG coaching and court facilities in Badminton and Squash and this year was particularly successful as the Junior Squash Team came second overall, winning themselves shiny Silver medals!
The competition in the Senior Squash gets tougher year by year and our Epsom & Ewell team battled valiantly to the end, coming 5th overall. But with young new talent coming up the ranks, let's keep our fingers crossed for next year's Games!
